"Last summer, 16 year old Kelsey Monson invited six friends over for a special party. In the backyard of her Seattle home, two instructors holding heavy pads taught Kelsey and her friends the finer points of punching, kicking.

Self-Defense parties, or protection parties-in which kids learn how to defend themselves against someone who gets aggressive-are growing in popularity around the country. Though no organization keeps track of the numbers, one California-based company, Personal Protection Parties, has seen teen participation in its events shoot up 300 percent since 2003. Even the Girl Scouts are in on it: their Project Anti-Violence Education - P.A.V.E. the Way-gives money to local troops to hire self-defense teachers."
